2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Now Available

Mitsubishi’s best-selling model, the Outlander Sport, is back and on sale now at Chapman Mitsubishi. For 2014, the redesigned five-passenger crossover sports new tech and interior touches.

Offered in ES, SE and GT trim levels, the 2014 Outlander is equipped with standard power exterior mirrors and dark-tinted rear privacy glass. Last year’s split clamshell-style tailgate is replaced with a conventional top-hinged lift gate design.

According to Edmunds, the 2014 Outlander is equipped with soft-touch interior materials and standard gloss black trim. Third-row jump seats are standard, expanding passenger capacity to 7 passengers. Additional standard features for the Outlander ES include air conditioning, power windows, power door locks with remote keyless entry, CD player, cruise control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel.

Under the hood, the 2014 Outlander ES and SE models are equipped with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 166 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. Both models offer front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission that includes a new Acceleration Control feature designed to mimic the shift points of a traditional transmission. A driver-selected Eco mode improves fuel economy by reducing engine output and climate control function. The 2014 Outlander GT is equipped with a 3.0-liter V-6 engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, and Mitsubishi’s S-AWC all-wheel-drive system. Horsepower output measures 224 at 6,250 rpm, and torque measures 215 lb.-ft. at 3,750 rpm.

As for safety, every 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander for sale is equipped with seven standard air bags, including a knee air bag for the driver. Traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, and a new Brake Pedal Recession Protection Structure are also included. A reversing camera is standard on the 2014 Outlander SE, while the Outlander GT model adds rain-sensing wipers. Optional safety features include an adaptive cruise control system with a forward-collision mitigation system that detects obstacles in the Outlander’s path, sounds a warning, and can automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not respond. The Outlander SE and GT can also be equipped with a lane-departure warning system.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has made their standards of Top Safety Picks tougher with each passing year. This year there are 117 cars on their list of 2013 IIHS Top Safety Picks and two of which are Mitsubishi models – 2013 Outlander and Lancer.

It received the top score in front, side-impact, rear and roof-strength crash tests. The Lancer also received an overall safety score of four stars out of five from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Specs increase to 224 horsepower at 6250 rpm with a generous 215 lb.-ft. of torque at 3750 rpm.

Mitsubishi revealed that the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid EV is set for release in September. They announced that the plug-in Outlander will “share its architecture with the soon-to-be-introduced New Outlander’s ICE versions” and claims that it will be the first-ever mainstream vehicle from a major manufacturer “envisaged from the outset with built-in provisions for either ICE or PHEV powertrains.” Mitsubishi also claims that the plug-in Outlander will become the first-ever “permanent 4WD electric car in series production.”

“It is definitely coming here to the USA” said Roger Yasukawa, Mitsubishi Motors North America spokesman. “We are targeting fiscal year 2013—which probably means the later part of 2013 to March 2014.

Mitsubishi has released a few details of the car and it seems to be based on the all-new 2013 Outlander. New Mitsubishi Phoenix enthusiasts will also be happy to know it will also be offered with a gasoline engine. The Plug-In Hybrid version of the new Outlander will have permanent electric all-wheel drive–the first all-electric AWD vehicle to go into volume production–that can be supplemented by torque from the engine when required. The details of the powertrain were previewed in 2009 in the PX-MiEV Concept, as well as the follow-on 2011 PX-MiEV II Concept, which demonstrated a remarkably flexible–and complex–drive system that will underlie several vehicles from Mitsubishi by 2020.

The Outlander PHEV is expected to offer a total range of 497 miles, and offer three 4WD drive modes: Pure (twin-motor electric-only drive), Series (twin-motor electric drive supported by range-extending generator) and Parallel (ICE engine supported by twin-motor electric drive). Mitsubishi also says its performance will be equivalent to that of a 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine, but with CO2 emissions of 50 g/km or less and a driving range of 500 miles or more with a full gas tank and batteries fully charged.
