Next-Generation Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Will Return in 2015

Lancer Evolution

As automotive technology evolves at a rapid pace, so do the cars that we come to know and love.  Coming in 2015, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution next-generation XI will likely be very different than what you have seen in the past from the performance sedan.

The new Evolution is sure to reflect the progress Mitsubishi has made in plug-in hybrid technology. But if you are concerned with performance, the power output will actually increase. It has been rumored that it will have more than 500 horsepower on some high-performance models, allowing the new Evolution sports sedan to have sprint times from 0-62 mph in just 5 seconds.

According to Motor Trend Magazine, the performance demands on the new Evolution are so great that the typical Renault platform would not handle it. It will come with its own specially developed platform to handle the hybrid performance powertrain. This technology has developed to the point where Mitsubishi is ready to put it into production with a new performance vehicle. It will be highly efficient and will incorporate a smaller engine, smaller electric motors, and lighter, better-performing batteries for the new performance package.

The next-gen Evolution will also be 4WD, but not as you know it. Like the Outlander PHEV, the Evolution will employ motors front and back, but will generate similar amounts of power. They will be significantly downsized and the battery pack will be slotted under the rear seats, producing a perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution.

We don’t know what the new XI Evolution will look like, but there’s been speculation that it will resemble the RA concept. According to Mitsubishi, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI will be redesigned for the 2016 model year, while the Lancer Evolution X will continue to be on sale through the end of 2015.
