2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Rated IIHS Top Safety Pick+

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

To qualify for the 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests; a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test; and a basic, advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.

Available at Chapman Mitsubishi, the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander is a seven-passenger crossover SUV that’s available in three trim levels: the base ES, midrange SE and top-of-the-line GT. It is offered with two powertrains. The ES and SE both get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard. ES models are front-wheel drive only, while the SE can be had with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander’s exceptional IIHS “Top Safety Pick+” rating can be attributed to the superlative engineering of its rigid, high-tensile steel body/chassis along with the availability of numerous advanced features including a radar-based Forward Collision Mitigation accident/impact reduction technology. In its evaluation of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander’s Forward Collision Mitigation., a system that includes both audio and visual warnings to the driver as well as initiates automatic braking if necessary, the IIHS awarded the system an “advanced” rating. Other standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, hill-start assist, a driver-side knee airbag, front seat side airbags and side curtain airbags.

Optional next-generation safety technology features include a camera-based Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine are above average at 25 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined when equipped with all-wheel drive. With the 3.0-liter V6, the Outlander’s fuel economy drops to 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.
